What contractors actually ask us
Application timing, how much you need, what to bring, and the things we won't claim until we can back them up.
- How far ahead of a storm should I apply it?
- Generally a few hours to a couple of days ahead, on dry pavement. The water evaporates and leaves the salt behind, so an application can sit and still be working when the snow starts. Don't apply into rain — it washes off.
- How much do I need for my lot?
- Published anti-icing guidance from state DOT winter-maintenance programs commonly starts around 30–50 gallons per lane mile, or roughly 0.75 to 1 gallon per 1,000 square feet of parking lot. Those are the industry's starting points, not our specification — your surface, drainage and traffic all move the number. Work from the low end for a first order: most people over-order the first time, and you can order again in a couple of minutes.
- What's the concentration?
- Sodium chloride brine. Target concentration: 23.3% salt by weight. That is the yard's production target, and it is the concentration salt brine works best at: its freezing point bottoms out there, around -6°F. The practical working floor is well above that — as pavement temperatures drop through the teens, straight salt brine gets slow enough that most crews switch to a blend or a different chloride.
- Do I have to ask for a price on a big load?
- No. Put the quantity into the order page and it prices it there and then — including any volume break that applies at that quantity — with the delivery fee and tax, before you pay. The price you are shown is the price you are charged. Online orders run up to a full tanker load of brine and 22 cubic yards of salt; past that, ask.
- What do I bring to pick up bulk brine?
- Any suitable, clean container rated for liquid, mounted securely on your truck or trailer — that is the whole requirement, and it does not matter what the trade calls it. Brine runs about 10 pounds per gallon, so a 500-gallon load is roughly 5,000 pounds. Check your vehicle and trailer ratings before you load, and make sure whatever you bring is strapped down.
- Do I need special equipment to apply it?
- For a driveway or a walk, a garden pump sprayer is genuinely fine. For lots and roads you want a skid or tailgate sprayer with a boom. If you're buying bulk we can point you at the setups other customers run.
- When can I collect it?
- Order online at any hour — the order page takes payment whenever you are looking at it, and you pick your collection day there. Loading itself happens at the yard during its posted loading hours, which are on the yard's own page. There is no unattended self-serve fill, so if you need loading outside those hours, use the quote form before you set off rather than driving out on an assumption.
- Can I set up an account?
- Yes. Open Customer portal and create one with an email sign-in link. Using it for each purchase keeps your receipts, order history and saved card together, and lets you reorder a past load in a couple of clicks. Delivery needs no separate arrangement: it is priced from your address in the order page and charged with the rest.
- Can I change or cancel an order?
- Ask as early as you can, quoting the order code from your confirmation — your orders are in Customer portal. Once brine is in your tank it can't be taken back, so check the quantity before you pay. We haven't published cancellation or refund terms here because they haven't been set, and we'd rather say that than print something we don't stand behind.
